So You Want To Get Into HEMA
Lots of people will want to try Historical European Martial Arts in this new year, so I figured why not go into further detail about starting out in HEMA as a beginner.

What Is A Falchion? Answered

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie 5 дней назад

      It's not a universal rule, but usually it is frowned upon as protection specifically on the feet is rarer and harder to obtain, which is problematic considering the idea of an enthusiastic and athletic man slamming a two-handed sword straight down onto that area!

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie 5 дней назад

      In general, I have usually seen rulesets that explicitly ban striking with the edge of a shield, so just making a spiked pavise design rounded off in a reasonably safe way should be sufficient. In terms of using it offensively to be more realistic, I would recommend softening the edges not just in shape but also in terms of edging materials (rubber/foam/linen/wool/etc) and then gauging each fighter's protective equipment level up to full steel sparring levels regardless of main weapons used.

      Well, to put everything upfront for you to observe: - I am politically moderately left-leaning. - I play nice with transgender people even if I don't understand their experiences (as someone born male and comfortable with remaining so). - I don't hate business and profit on a gentle level, but I do strongly support workers unions and hate lobbying/bribing. - I was diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum and am strongly opposed to Autism Speaks. - I am religiously a Protestant Christian, of a nicer British variety, not like the "southern Baptist" types. - I am heavily in support of the National Health Service and would never recommend privatised healthcare, especially as someone who has needed their medical care in the past. - I hate microtransactions in computer games as I remember before they existed and games were always much better without them. - I will try my best not to take scam sponsors on this channel, even if they offer a lot of money, but I cannot guarantee I will not be tricked by people who seem nice. If none of that is immediately problematic, then you should be fine.

    If you can find a way to hang a large, bright-colored sheet on a wall behind you it would go a long way. "Backdrop stands" exist for filmographers to use as portable blank canvas or lighting control. But I see you're working with limited room. If you had somewhere outside to go or a garage be much better. The black/dark clothes worked against you as well, especially with the black practice buckler. (I browsed your channel and realized you've done work with this in earlier and popular vids surprised you chose to film this in the room so dark.) It also might help to find imagery to use to emphasize the point, like showing historical artwork (all of which is public domain) and such; example an Indian dhal shield or some Native American shields (all I know of are pretty small) vs European buckler. This provides interest and proof of concept while changing things around from the living room. . To finish the point of the shield, you could've held out both to demonstrate that a strap shield will hold your hand closer to the edge which is why the buckler offers more protection because it's essentially a center-grip shield in which movement and deflection is more important compared to raw coverage.

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie 26 дней назад

      I actually have one, but figured nobody would watch the video anyway, let alone eight hundred in just two days! I'll get better lighting and try to find extra time for setup so I can put the proper effort into videos, now that I'm back.

    • @MedievalGenie
      @MedievalGenie 29 дней назад

      In a military situation, obviously the shield is far better, but unlike in RPGs you cannot carry a large shield around you all day every day as a civilian. Something like the buckler was practical for everyday carry.

      The same expansions that I showed on the top of the head with triangulating outwards can be applied, just starting further out. Probably having expansions starting on the exact lines of the shoulders should help, possibly starting on the collarbone a bit before the shoulders themselves. I admit I haven't completed a large coif yet though.

    Regarding 8:15, as a lighter alternative to a steel crowbar, there are titanium crowbars of equivalent lengths. Titanium is 45% lighter than steel and can be as strong as steel. Therefore wielding a titanium crowbar is faster than wielding a heavy steel crowbar. Titanium crowbars are from Russia. Submarine hulls were made from titanium during the Soviet Union. Titanium hull submarines are lighter, faster and more corrosion resistant than steel hull submarines.

    • @MedievalGenie

    I was initially thinking about how people use them to break into houses, but actually you can possibly use them to help free people from cars in the event of a crash. I say this because I seen a crash on my way home earlier I mean stepped outside the pawn shop and it happened. The wheel was sideways on their SUV and the passenger side was completely locked no way they could get out that way. Glad it was only one driver in that vehicle, but that's what made me research tools today and thats why I'm buying a crowbar. It's not as good as a jaws of life or anything though. I guess they can still open the other doors too.

    The idea behind priority is simple: if attacked, you must first defend before you attack. It gets sticky when it comes to what counts as an attack and what counts as a defense. I don't practice HEMA, but it seems to me that in HEMA competitions, there are also plenty of rules about how the hits get to count for how many points, etc. You guys understand and accept that system. Fair play to you. The electronic scoring system in Olympic fencing is primarily to determine if hits are on target or not (foil and sabre both have limited areas you can score on against your opponent). The time-out for a hit is HALF of what the electronic system does. Epée allows for simultaneous hits. In the OLD days, Olympic fencing used multiple referees who would rule on hits. HEMA still uses the multiple referee system. Trust me, the electronic system is infinitely better. HEMA also seems to have a restricted area for bouts in tournaments. In Olympic fencing, the rules about going off the strip are not hard to understand and they are not what you mention. Priority does not disappear when you go off strip. The sport fencing strip is 1.5 meters wide. It's not a balance beam. There is lateral footwork. HEMA also seems to have lots of rules, at least at tournaments. The HEMA rules are different from Olympic fencing. Different rules lead to different games. If you like HEMA, fair play to you. Enjoy your game, but it is no in way better than Olympic fencing. Olympic fencing is exciting. You think flung attacks in sabre look silly. They are really hard to execute and quite athletic. You seem to think that flicks are somehow cheating (bending the tip). Flicks require incredible timing, command of distance, and tip control. It takes years to develop a strong flick game. Overall, Olympic fencing is extremely safe. We have 100 years of development in the safety equipment. There are standards for equipment and safety is always, always first in everyone's mind. Olympic fencing is also highly international. You can go to any major city in the world and find Olympic fencing partners. And we have the SAME RULES everywhere, which does not seem to be the case for HEMA. It'd be nice if HEMA advocates start from the realization that HEMA is an extremely young discipline. When HEMA has 100-plus years of development, we'll be able to see how the rules look. Overall, Olympic fencers understand that what we do is a sport. As far as "not giving a care about your life" when you attack with priority, that is the WHOLE POINT of Olympic fencing: IT IS A SPORT. We are PRACTICING A SPORT. We do not even IMAGINE the desire to hurt one another, and if you want to "hit clean," fence epée where you'd damn well better close out the line on your parry or you're going to get pasted over and over again with double touches. Grabbing an opponent's weapon is TOTALLY disallowed in Olympic fencing. It is not just a matter of your opponent scoring. You get penalized for it. Same with grabbing your opponent. The basic difference is that Olympic fencing is a really old SPORT. HEMA is a new sport motivated very directly by a fantasy of armed combat. And I have never noticed that HEMA folks have bad footwork, at least not more than Olympic fencers. There are plenty of Olympic fencers with TERRIBLE footwork. There are also some who look like they are gliding effortlessly on the strip. Any good fencer (either school) should start with good footwork. That Olympic fencing is not good prep for HEMA I believe.

    Why you show mostly bronze age swords? the celts as the romans encountered (and the romans themself) were ironage cultures. the late bronzage/early ironage period, which is called hallstatt-culture is loosley associated with proto-celts, but there is a time gap of 600 years of this swordstyle and the first mention of celts. and some of your swords are eary bronzeage, so the gap widens to 2000 years...

    7:40 The extra waist loops for the suspenders are helpful to adjust the path and pull of the suspenders. For example the inner front loops mean the suspenders run right across my nipples and are uncomfortable, while the outer loops mean that the straps run down the outside of my chest. You may also find it helps make the suspenders more comfortable on the neck and shoulders too. The outer loops are also slightly lower down so you can do a quick adjustment on the length of the trousers while ensuring you are using the full length of the velcro fastner. Particularly handy if you did what I did and reroute the webbing through the adjustment buckle at the front to lock it off so it can no longer slide through the buckle without some serious work. You may also want to reroute the webbing anyway as my pair came with the excess webbing spilling out from the top of the buckle meaning you have annoying flappy webbing getting in the way all the time. Thorough video though :)
